Popular public pools draw hundreds of swimmers at Recreation Park in Galena, the Township Park pool in Stockton and Dunleith Park pool in East Dubuque. Swimming at the all-seasons pool complex at the Galena Territory and outdoor pool at Apple Canyon Lake is reserved for property owners and their guests.

The upper Mississippi River is home to over 119 species of fish. Favorites are walleye, large and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, northern pike and bluegill. Equestrians will find miles of groomed trails through the wooded hills of Galena and Jo Daviess County. The Shenandoah Riding Center is open all year and offers 1-hour tours. The Schurmeier Teaching Forest near Elizabeth offers 2 miles of beginner and intermediate trails.

Public hunting areas abound in northwest Illinois, along with many real estate listings with hunting land for sale. Seasonal hunting controlled by Illinois DNR include: Tapley Woods, 5 mi. west of Elizabeth: 259 acres; Hanover Bluff State Natural Area, north of Hanover, 380 acres; Mississippi Palisades, 3 mi. north of Savanna, 1,500 acres.
