If you’re hunting for great houses, what better place to do it than at Lake Carroll? That’s the reason the HGTV mega-hit House Hunters rolled into town last fall to put a bright spotlight on Northwest Illinois’ Best Kept Secret.

Last year, broker Cyndy Griffin was contacted by House Hunters about the possibility of filming an episode. Cyndy has been selling real estate at the lake for 14 years and is a full time resident, so she was glad for the chance to promote the community. By October, everything was set and the clients—Jimmy and Amy Holt—arrived along with the House Hunters film crew to begin their, well, house hunting. The Holts had their hearts set on a lake house for their family of four. They had narrowed their choices to three homes and were planning to make their final decision that week.

Why were the Holts focused on Lake Carroll? It’s a true four-season recreational community. At 636 acres with 22 miles of shoreline, Lake Carroll is the largest privately held lake in the state. There’s abundant room for everyone to enjoy the water the way they like best—swimming, jet skiing, waterskiing, tubing, pontoon cruising—and that’s in addition the amazing fishing.

But as wonderful as the lake is, there’s far more to Lake Carroll than a pristine body of water. This private community was designed from the ground up to showcase the spectacular beauty of the region, while offering recreational amenities for any age all year round:

  • Two marinas, adjacent to main roads and just minutes from any home in the community.
  • A magnificent 18 hole golf course nestled in rolling hills and scenic vales.
  • A club house with a fully stocked pro shop, full support services for the golfer and excellent dining.
  • A 15 mile ATV trail that winds its way through forests, streams and panoramic hilltop views.
  • A fully equipped aquatic center with two pools, one indoor and one outdoor.
  • The Plumtree Ski Area, a ski facility with lodge, tube tow and sensational scenery.
  • An equestrian facility and equestrian zoning for those who would prefer to keep their horse at their home.
  • Camp grounds equipped for everything from tent camping to full size RV’s.

Every Lake Carroll property owner has full access to all of these recreational amenities.

After three long days of filming, the Holts chose a dream home for themselves and their three girls. They’ll be enjoying the Lake Carroll lifestyle for years to come.

Below, you’ll find listings for the three homes the Holts visited, with full details on the homes as well as photos of the interior and exterior.

If you’d like a peek behind the scenes at what it’s like to make a House Hunters episode, you can read Cyndy’s blog post about it.
